A Southern California native, Dr. Umangi Popat attended University of California, Los Angeles for her undergraduate studies where she earned her Bachelors degree in Psychobiology. After graduating from UCLA, she completed her doctorate training at Southern California College of Optometry. She then went on to complete an ocular disease residency at the Philadelphia Veterans Affairs Hospital. Although the main focus of her training was on ocular disease, she was exposed to a myriad of different specialties including low vision, specialty contact lenses, neuro-ophthalmology, and traumatic brain injury. During her residency she also saw patients at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and worked with a top retina doctor at the renowned Wills Eye Hospital. In addition to this training, Dr. Popat is also glaucoma-certified.
After her time in Philadelphia, Dr. Popat moved to New York City, where she practiced optometry for seven years before moving back to Los Angeles. Her experience in various settings allows her to care for the diverse patient population that exists here in Southern California. She is able to conduct full eye exams in Spanish as well as other languages such as Gujarati and Hindi. She takes great pride in being kind and compassionate toward each patient and makes sure that no questions are ever left unanswered. This practice has allowed her to develop a great rapport with her patients.
In addition to providing care to patients in a clinical setting, Dr. Popat is passionate about providing vision care to those in need. In the last eight years, she has been very active with the charitable organization OneSight and has traveled to many cities within the US as well as India, China, Zambia, Nicaragua, and Chile to help provide eye care to underserved populations.
