SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA EYE INSTITUTE LAUNCHES GLAUCOMA FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM
One-year program trains future glaucoma leaders to serve unmet needs of the LA community
The clinical and surgical fellowship, approved by the Association of University Professors of Ophthalmology (AUPO) Fellowship Compliance Committee, will offer comprehensive subspecialty training in glaucoma management, diagnosis, and surgery to post-resident trainees.
The program combines university-level education and clinical hands-on training opportunities - enabling fellows to gain in-depth knowledge about the pathophysiology and management of glaucoma and related disorders, while overseeing complex eye disease in a variety of patients ranging from children to adults.
The surgical experience is broad and includes conventional surgery, such as glaucoma drain-age devices (Baerveldt/Ahmed), trabeculectomies (fornix/limbal based), goniotomies, and novel techniques such as iStent, trabectome and express shunt. Southern California Eye Institute has state-of-the-art imaging and research facilities that add to the well-rounded experience offered during this important year of training.
"Through the fellowship program we are privileged to be able to train the next generation of glaucoma leaders and subspecialists to better educate and serve the growing vision needs of our community." said Rohit Varma, MD, MPH, Founding Director of SCEI and Fellowship Director.
Fellows have an opportunity to attend and present at ophthalmology meetings in the United States and abroad. There is one funded position available.
